XXIX International Student Surgical Olympiad named after Academician M.I. Perelman

Surgical training in Russia begins at Universities. The educational program contains a lot of subjects which describe a role of surgery in treating patients. Students also can visit surgical departments in hospitals or surgical clubs at the University. Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov also has a surgical students’ clubs. The eldest club is “Aesculap”, its history began in 1940. During this years, many of the future academicians, for example, famous cardiac surgeons George E. Falkowski and his apprentice Leo Bokeria graduated from this club. “Aesculap” has a unique educational program. It contains several steps, which improve surgical skills of future surgeons. One of the most important stage of this educational program is the surgical Olympiad. The surgical Olympiad, with its spirit of competition, is one of the most important tools for stimulation of the student’s interest in surgery and acquisition of practical surgical skills at the undergraduate level. After months of training and learning students can finally demonstrate their knowledges and skills in such events. One of the most significant models of these competitions is the Annual Moscow (International) Students’ Surgical Olympiad named after M.I. Perelman. The Olympiad’s organization resembles that of many football championships. Semifinal competitions are conducted throughout the federal territories of Russia. In each semifinal, the representatives of local Universities from 5 to 15 teams. Only two winners from each semifinal round can participate in the finals at the Sechenov University (about 30 teams). During the Olympiad the participants contend in different surgical fields: cardiovascular surgery (adult and pediatric), transplantology, neurosurgery (nerve grafting, trepanation, etc.), urology, gynaecology, abdominal surgery, proctology, laparoscopic techniques, endoscopy, plastic surgery, anaesthesiology (trachea intubation), traumatology (achilles tendon suture, osteosynthesis), desmurgy, as well as in other surgical fields and competitionsEach competition has a theoretic part for the knowledge of anatomy, surgical techniques and clinical thinking to be evaluated. The final stage of endovideosurgery competition is held in a special training center on live animals. The judges are experienced Russian and foreign surgeons who are professionals in their specialization ready to share their experience and knowledge with motivated students. In this year Organized Committee of Perelman Olympiad are going to meet more than 30 teams from each regions of Russia, students and surgeons from Belarus Republic, Ukraine, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Hungary, Japan.

We would like to invite you to take part in the final of the XXVIII Moscow (All-Russian) Student Surgical Olympiad with International Participation named after Academician M.I. Perelman that will be held on the 9–13th of April, 2019 on the basis of the Sechenov University. 

There are more than 25 teams expected to participate in the competitions. Previous years there were students and surgeons from Japan, Hungary, Belarus, Ukraine, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan hosted. The total number of participants and judges in 2019 is expected to be more than 500 people.

M.I. Perelman International Student Surgical Olympics

On the 30th of November and the 1st of December the XXVIII M.I. Perelman All-Russian Student Surgical Olympiad semifinal took place in Voronezh. On the first competition day the «Aesculap» team showed great results. All the participants, who took part in the staged competitions, got awards.

Our surgical team was the second in the rank of team awards. The first place award was achieved by the team of the Burdenko Voronezh State Medical University, the third one — by the Yaroslavl State Medical University. The first five teams which showed the best results during the Olympiad, reached the final of the Olympiad which will take place on the 9-13th of April in Moscow.

Congratulations to the guys with such an excellent performance, we are looking forward to meeting all of them in Moscow this spring!6L-s48ZsVrY
